Those of you reading this that hoped to channel your inner pirate by showing up for one of the open casting calls have missed the April 25th casting call here on Kauai. However if you live on Kauai or Oahu you can still be considered for the film. You need to mail in a current color 3"x5" photo. Do not mail in an 8"x19" photo unless you submit a 3"x5" photo with it. You need to include your height, weight, shirt, coat and pants size, phone numbers and email address. All of this should be submitted by mail to:

Oh, I almost forgot to mention what kind of extras are being sought for the film. Sorry ladies, but the only female roles that are being cast are for nationally ranked or former Olympic synchronized swimmers. This certainly narrows down the availability pool, huh? The guys have a little easier time as they are being cast as featured extras, stand-ins, and photo doubles. The roles are for Pirates and Sailors.
This portion of filming will take place on ships and a semi-deserted island location.
The production will then move to London where the remainder of the film will be shot and different extras will be cast there. In case you're wondering exactly what would make a good Pirate or Sailor, Sande has simplified things by giving us exactly what they're seeking:
Pirates
Looking for authentic-looking scavenger-types. Ages 18 to 60's, all ethnicities, especially extreme character types-thin, tall, short, emaciated, odd features, huge nose, eyes, ears, lazy eye, grizzled and wrinkled faces, odd body types, missing limbs, teeth, etc. Men only.
Sailors
Thin and average builds, from good looking to extreme characters. British types, Spaniards or other ethnicity. Ages 18 to 50's. Men only.
I've heard that being an extra in a film is a really fun experience and that the food is out of this world. So naturally I looked over the list carefully to see which one of the roles would fit me. I'm actually happy to report that in the Pirates category I don't seem to have anything they're looking for, having eaten far too regularly to be considered emaciated. The same seems to go for Sailors, although my wife Gale might argue that I might qualify under the "extreme character" category.
Eight weeks of filming will be a giant boost to our economy here on Kauai and we welcome each and every one of the crew members!

George Clooney filming on the North Shore of Kauai
for his new movie "The Descendants"

|
George Clooney has been filming on the north shore of Kauai for his new movie "The Descendants". The movie centers on a wealthy landowner who takes his two daughters on a search for his wife's lover in the hopes of keeping his family together. A look at a summary of the source novel, however, reveals more nuance as well as the trademark dark comedy tone Director Alexander Payne is so adept at handling.
Clooney plays the landowner who is descended from a Hawaiian princess and a haole (white person/foreigner). He's had a life of leisure and is married to a beautiful, adventurous woman, now in a terminal coma after a catamaran accident.
His 10 and 17 year old daughters are strangers to him, and his relationship with them is awkward at best. He's also mulling over a business deal that would involve him selling his family land to a real estate developer. As he's contemplating pulling the plug on his wife, he finds out that she has been having an affair for some time with a real estate broker. He gathers his children (the eldest sent from her boarding school) in search of his wife's lover.

"Just Go With It" is an upcoming romantic comedy directed by Dennis Dugan and starring Jennifer Aniston, Nicole Kidman, Adam Sandler and Brooklyn Decker. For those of you that didn't know, Brooklyn is the wife of tennis champ Andy Rodderick and is well know as a "hot model" for Sports Illustrated swimsuit addition and Victoria's Secret. There will also be a cameo appearance by the plastic reality star Heidi Montage. Remember, she's the one who can't get enough plastic surgery in order to look her very best. This will be her first movie appearance. Look for the film will be released on February 11, 2011.
The story involves Adam Sandler recruiting Jennifer Aniston to pose as his soon-to -be-divorced wife and her kids to pretend to be his fake family. There isn't much else in print about the movie, however with this cast on Kauai for filming, it should make for some interesting encounters for us locals.
Ninini Point Lighthouse
A bit of Kauai island history as reported by Hank Sobeleski to The Garden Island
In 1897, the republic of Hawaii obtained a lease from Lihue Plantation Company Ltd. on Ninini Point in Nawiliwili as the site for construction of a wooden, 40 foot tall, trestle-frame light tower with a little room set atop it, painted white.
A small house for Manuel Souza, the first Ninini Point light keeper, and his wife Marie, was also built nearby. Each evening just before sunset, Souza would climb the light tower to light an oil lamp, which he would tend throughout the night. Then about 30 minutes after sunrise each morning, he would extinguish the light, clean the lamp and polish the reflector, which was visible at sea for 10 miles. Souza's other duties consisted on maintaining the tower, his house and the grounds for $6 per month plus his living quarters.
When Souza resigned in 1903 after complaining of an insufficient salary, Carl Blum became Ninini Point light keeper at $8 per month. With Blum's twenty five percent increase in salary, Souza may have just had a good point about his salary.
In 1906, the original light tower was replaced with a thirty three and a half foot tall, white wooden mast with a new lamp. At its base, a modest house painted white with lead colored trimmings and a red roof was built. Both mast and house were rebuilt in 1923 and repaired in 1926.
Oliver Kua, light keeper from 1918 through 1939, was the last of seven light keepers at Ninini point. He would climb the wooden mast each morning, lower the lamp and service it. In 1933 a new house was built for Kua with three bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen and bathroom with outbuildings close by. The 86 foot tall cylindrical concrete lighthouse (116 feet including the Fresnel lens) presently at Ninini Point was also built at this time.
Oliver retired when the U.S. Cost Guard took over the lighthouse service in 1939. The lighthouse was finally automated in 1953.
Directions to the Ninini Point Lighthouse
Take Highway 50 toward Lihue. Turn right onto Rice Street where Highway 50 becomes Highway 56. About one and a half miles down Rice street, turn left. This road leads past the Kiele and Lagoons Golf Courses. Park near Ninini Beach. Follow the trail past the 13th hole of the Lagoons Course, past the beach and to Ninini Point.
